George Orwell once described Jura as ‘ungettable to’ but, in fact, there are several ways to get here!
Booking is currently essential on all mainland routes, including for foot passengers. Ferry spaces are currently restricted due to social distancing.
To protect island communities with basic medical facilities the Scottish Government currently advises visitors to take a lateral flow test 3 days before travelling to the islands and on the day of travel, only travelling if you have a negative test.
In order to protect medically vulnerable family members we ask you to follow this advice if you wish to stay in our home. Tests are free and can be delivered to your home see www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests for more information.
Direct to Jura
The Jura Passenger Ferry runs direct from Tayvallich near Lochgilphead to Craighouse on Jura. The boat berths at the stone pier by the shop, just 10 minutes walk from Ardcraig.
The ferry connects with public transport to / from Glasgow and Oban several times a week. Check the website for details. If you are driving to Tayvallich, please make sure you leave your car in the designated ferry parking by the village hall (just past the ferry) and take note of the suggested parking donations.
The passenger ferry is also available by private charter both during the season and throughout the off season.
There is a regular ferry service from Port Askaig on Islay to Feolin on Jura. There are scheduled crossings between 7.30am and 6.30pm 6 days a week, with additional bookable sailings outwith these times and a reduced Sunday service. Please search the Argyll and Bute Council website for the most up to date version of the timetable. You do not need to book your car for a scheduled crossing (out of hour crossings must be booked in advance).
To get to Islay you can catch one of the several CalMac ferries that leave Kennacraig on the Mull of Kintyre each day, or one of their ferries departing Oban on specific days of the week. Vehicle bookings must be made in advance or cars can be left in the car park at the ferry terminal.
